  • Red Oak

Alright, let’s chat about why red oak could be the perfect choice for your new table, especially if you’re managing a bustling household with kids.

First off, red oak is incredibly sturdy. We’re talking about a wood that can handle the wear and tear of everyday family life. Kids spill things, drop things, and occasionally try their hand at art projects, and red oak stands up to it all with grace. It’s tough, so you won’t be fretting over scratches or dents.

Now, let’s talk about looks. Red oak has this gorgeous, warm, natural tone that instantly brightens up a room. It’s got a lovely grain pattern that adds character without being too flashy. So it’s stylish but still down-to-earth—kind of like how we juggle family life with a touch of elegance.

Plus, red oak is super versatile. Whether you’re going for a cozy, rustic look or something a bit more modern, red oak fits right in. It can be finished in various ways to match your home’s decor, which is great if you’re always changing things up a bit.

So, if you want a table that’s going to hold up through family dinners, craft projects, and all the little messes that come with kids, red oak is a fantastic choice. It’s durable, beautiful, and ready for anything your family can throw at it!

  • White Oak

White oak is like the unsung hero of furniture wood—it’s incredibly durable and tough, which is just what you need when you’ve got kids running around. From those inevitable spills to the occasional roughhousing, white oak can handle it all without losing its charm.

And let’s talk about how it looks. White oak has this beautiful, natural light color that adds a fresh, clean vibe to any room. It’s got a subtle grain that’s both elegant and understated. So, it’s perfect if you want something that feels timeless but still blends nicely with your home’s decor.

What’s also great is that white oak is super versatile. You can finish it in a variety of ways to match your style, whether you’re into a cozy, rustic look or something a bit more sleek and modern. Plus, it’s known for its stability and resistance to warping, so it’s a solid choice that won’t let you down over the years.

So if you’re after a table that’s going to stand up to the daily hustle and bustle while looking fabulous and lasting for years to come, white oak is a wonderful choice. It’s practical, beautiful, and ready for whatever your family throws its way!

Step 1: select your wood

  1. If you have a fallen log with sentimental value and want to turn it into custom furniture, we're here to help. We can transport your log to our workshop or you can bring it to us.

  2. Alternately, we offer a wide selection of kiln-dried wood species. Our knowledgeable team is always ready to give you a tour and help you choose the perfect materials for your project.

Step 2: sawMilling

If you have logs and dimensions ready, simply share those details with us, and we'll take it from there. At our site, we operate two types of sawmills to meet your needs:

  • “Little Red”: Our traditional mill, is perfect for cutting logs up to 24 inches wide and 16 feet long. Ideal for various projects where classic milling is preferred.

  • “Big Blue”: Our specialized mill is designed for larger projects, capable of cutting slabs up to 8 feet wide and 15 feet long. This is our go-to for crafting impressive table slabs and other substantial pieces.

Furniture with history to PRESERVE

Narrative tale: Turning My Grandfather’s Cherry Tree into a Cherished Heirloom

As I stand beneath the sprawling branches of my grandfather’s cherry tree, I’m reminded of the many summers spent at the cottage he built with his own hands. The tree, now tall and leaning precariously toward the cottage, carries with it a rich tapestry of memories. This tree isn’t just a part of the landscape; it’s a living connection to my grandfather’s legacy and the countless moments of joy shared in his summer home.

Rather than letting this cherished tree be reduced to wood chips, I see an opportunity to honor my grandfather’s memory. Imagine a dining table where the rich cherry wood, once a part of this majestic tree, now serves as a centerpiece for future family gatherings. A tangible reminder of my grandfather’s enduring presence and the family traditions he nurtured. It’s a beautiful tribute that ensures the tree’s legacy will live on, not just in memory, but in the very heart of our home.

As we craft these pieces, we’re not just preserving wood; we’re preserving a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and family. It’s a fitting tribute to a tree that has stood as a silent witness to the joy and unity of generations past and will continue to enrich the lives of those who come after us.

Step 3: Kiln Drying and Flattening

If you’re working with fresh-cut, "green" (wet) wood, it’s essential to dry and sterilize it before use. Our iDRY vacuum kilns are designed to effectively eliminate bugs, mold, and fungus. Our iDRY Vacuum Kilns not only comply with USDA Heat Sterilization Requirements but also dry wood 3 to 5 times faster than traditional kilns. This allows us to process your lumber in just weeks, rather than months. Furthermore, vacuum kiln technology excels at drying thick, wide slabs all the way through to the core, ensuring top-quality results for your wood projects.

Next, we move on to flattening. Should any bowing occur before or after the kiln drying process, our flattener can effortlessly correct it. We purposely cut our slabs thicker on our sawmills to account for potential bowing, ensuring that you retain the desired thickness for your board.

(Note: If you’re purchasing slabs from our wall, you don’t need to worry about kiln drying—every slab has already been sterilized.)

Step 4: Furniture Making Time

Creating furniture involves a meticulous and detailed process to ensure every piece meets our high standards. Here’s a step-by-step look at how we bring your custom furniture to life:

  1. Initial Cutting: We start by cutting the raw slabs to your desired dimensions using our sawmills. This step ensures that the pieces are the right size for your project and allows us to accommodate any specific design elements you have in mind.

  2. Bark Removal: Once the slabs are cut, we carefully remove any bark to achieve a clean and smooth surface. This not only enhances the appearance but also prepares the wood for the next stages.

  3. Epoxy Mix and Pour: For pieces that feature epoxy, we build custom molds and carefully mix and pour the epoxy according to your color choices and design specifications. This process allows us to fill any gaps or cracks and to create unique, visually striking elements.

  4. Flattening: If needed, we use our flattener to correct any bowing or warping that may have occurred during drying or handling. This ensures a perfectly flat surface for the final touches.

  5. Planing: We run the slabs through our planning machine to ensure uniform thickness and to further smooth the surface. This step is crucial for achieving a consistent, even texture across the entire piece.

  6. PTEC or Epoxy Puddy: Used for filling any small cracks and crevices.

  7. Sanding: The slabs are then sanded to smooth out rough areas and imperfections. This process helps to reveal the wood's natural beauty and prepares it for finishing.

  8. Edge Rounding: We round over the edges of the piece to enhance both its aesthetics and safety. This detail adds a polished look and ensures comfortable use.

  9. Apply Finishing Coats: Finally, we apply a protective treatment and finish to seal the wood and bring out its natural luster. This coating not only enhances the appearance but also provides durability and resistance to wear.

Each step in our process is performed with care and precision to ensure that your furniture is not only beautiful but also of the highest quality. From the initial cut to the final finish, our commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident in every piece we create.

The table produced is beautiful and just what we were looking for. Quality was exceptional, and the price was less than expected!
